Child Abuse |
| |
Abused or neglected children are also encouraged to phone YourCall as the counselors have vast experience to address such issues in a sensitive manner.
Abuse and neglect are broadly defined as any act that constitutes a threat to a child’s health and welfare. It may take the form of verbal, physical, emotional, psychological or sexual abuse.
Abuse also encompasses malnutrition and other kinds of deliberate neglect (physical, educational or emotional), which fails to provide for the child’s basic needs. Examples range from burns to exposure to extreme cold to withholding of food, water and medical care. Abused children may exhibit failure to thrive, slow development or lack of “normal” emotional responses and are deprived physically, psychologically, emotionally and spiritually.

Referrals |
|
The counselors help the person to understand that the abuse is not their fault and that they can do something about their situation. If the counselors, on assessment of symptoms, conclude that there is some kind of abuse, and that the caller is a minor, they will:
- Persistently guide them to act in their own best interest
- Encourage them to speak to their parents, teachers, another reliable person(s) or related institutions of authority
- Make them understand that abuse needs to be reported
- Refer them to the social welfare department
